The Siege of Ladysmith
In October eighteen ninety-nine, as war erupted between the British Empire and the Boer republics, the town of Ladysmith found itself trapped behind enemy lines.
What followed was one of the defining sieges of the Second Boer War. For one hundred and eighteen days, British soldiers and civilians endured relentless shellfire, disease, hunger, and uncertainty while Boer forces tightened their grip around the town. Attempts to relieve the garrison ended in disaster at Colenso and the blood-soaked heights of Spion Kop, turning Ladysmith into a symbol of both British resilience and military failure.
