As gold transformed the Transvaal and Johannesburg grew into one of the richest cities on earth, Rhodes became increasingly frustrated by the policies of President Paul Kruger and the government of the South African Republic. What began as a political dispute over rights, representation and influence gradually evolved into something far more dangerous.
